Welcome to the homepage of the artist Franz von Zülow!

Franz von Zülow is one of the most important representatives of applied arts at the beginning of the 20th century in Austria. He made picture books, calendar sheets, graphic cycles, wall paintings, sketches for wallpapers and fabrics, furthermore he decorated furniture and fitments. Zülow experimented with different new techniques and developed a special technique for printing paper cuts.  He made prints with landscapes and scenes of rural life, religious, fantastic and fairytale issues. Furthermore Zülow did some oil paintings, mostly landscapes with an expressive paint application.

His works are characterized by a decorative flatness, influenced by the early Viennese Secession. Besides the ornamental style of the Jugendstil Zülow also dealed with the new expressive ways of showing feelings and thus he developed a dynamic use of forms. Travels through Europe and Africa inspired him to many narrative and fantastic scenes.
